Stone chip repair
It is not always necessary to replace a windshield damaged by a stone chip. Repair is often a genuine alternative to the replacement of the entire windshield. The repair of laminated glass windshields is, however, only permissible if the following legal regulations and technical limitations are observed:
1. The damage should be repaired as soon as possible because moisture or dirt should not be allowed to become visibly trapped in the damaged area. Furthermore, trapped moisture and grime will give a poor repair result.
2. Only damage to the outer windshield surface that is no greater than 5 mm can be repaired. The inside screen and intermediate plastic foil must be intact. Small scratches and pittings, which are tiny breakouts of glass caused by sand particles, cannot be eliminated by this method.
3. Lines radiating from the impact point may be no longer than 50 mm and should not terminate at the edge of the windshield.
4. No repairs at all are allowed in the driver’s field of vision. This is defined as a 29 cm wide strip extending from the center of the steering wheel and limited at the top and bottom by the area swept by the wiper.
Procedure
After cleaning the area to be repaired the air is removed by vacuum and then very liquid resin is injected into the damaged area under high pressure so that it is pressed into even the finest cracks. UV light is then directed at the repaired area to cure the resin until it is almost invisible. The surface is then levelled and polished. After a successful repair, there are no further restrictions. Resistance to shattering, strength and ability to withstand external influences and moisture are guaranteed.

Getting a windshield repaired can be very confusing if you have never had to have this service before. There are a lot of different choices is price and service. Whether or not your stone chip will disappear, sometimes depends on the technician performing the repair, the type of resin used, the type of windshield repair kit and the type of break is in your windshield. There are four different types of stone chips and each on will turn out different based on the reasons explained.
 The first type of windshield break is called a star break.
A star break is a rock chip with multiple legs extending from the impact point. These repairs are very difficult to fix. Getting resin to flow to all ends of the break requires a very high viscosity resin and usually a windshield repair kit which can pull a vacuum. You can expect to still see the break after the repair is completed. When repaired properly the star break will not spread any farther.
 The second type of rock chip is called a bullseye break.
A bullseye break is a rock chip which looks like a circle. These are very easily repaired and can be fixed with no drilling or vacuum.  The third type of windshield break is a combination break
The combination break is exactly what it say it is, a combination. It is a combination of a bullseye and a star break. These are very hard to repair because of the damage to the glass. Proper technique, resin and windshield repair kit can make the appearance of these diminish but the hardly ever go away. Glass is usually chewed up and a large chunk of glass is usually missing. Talk to the technician about the break before deciding to repair or replace the windshield.
 The fourth type of stone chip is called a half moon break.
The half moon break is similar to the bullseye break except it does not make a complete circle. This break is also easily repaired with one of our windshield repair kits, and can be done in about five minutes. This break will usually disappear and will stop from spreading any further.
